Ohio ATV Insurance

Is my ATV covered on my Ohio Homeowner’s policy?

Before, July 1, 2009, most likely not. After, that date on almost all standard Ohio homeowners policies, definitely not.

New Ohio Law requires ATVs to be registered.

What changed? Effective July 1, 2009, the Ohio legislature began requiring that all ATVs be registered with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles. In addition, effective July 1, 2010, ATVS in Ohio will be required to display a license plate and validation sticker.

Before July 1, 2009, unregistered ATVs used solely to service an insured residence were provided liability coverage under a standard Ohio homeowners policy. Because of this strict wording, very few would be afforded any coverage because most people use their ATVs for recreational purposes.

This new Ohio registration requirement causes even these ATVs used soley to service an insured residence to be excluded from any possible coverage.

What’s an ATV owner to do?

Some insurance companies will provide coverage for ATVS on an auto policy for an additional premium.

The best option is probably to purchase motorcycle insurance to cover your ATV. You will find these policies to be very affordable and will also give you the peace of mind that your ATV is now covered.
